Busy Holiday Season!

Busy Busy Busy

Holiday Family Tree Project.  Our trees are an annual bulletin board.  Aren't they all unique?

Reindeer Applications
I just love this project.  Our class loved thinking up new reindeer names, making the antlers and their little red noses.  Thank you, Mrs. Walsky.

Santa Heads
We create these beautiful pictures in Paint.

Santa Sentences
My class just loved putting these great Santa Sentences together.  Thank you, Mrs.Walsky.

Reading with friends
My students love reading with others.  I made a fun book of my class reading to animals.  I used clip art to create the book.  I like to display the book first and then I will bind it for my classroom.

Skating with Mr. Lumsden
This week will be our last skating session with Mr. Lumsden.  We will be skating at 9:30am on Thursday

As you can see we have been busy.  Today we made crafts with the whole first grade.  It was fun traveling to all of the first grades and creating some holiday projects.  I love this time of year.
Glitter and Glue.  Sprinkles and Sparkles.

A reminder to all that our holiday concert is Thursday evening at  6:30 pm. in our pajamas.  Our holiday celebration will be on Friday.

Have a great week and thanks for stopping by.

Delightful December!

Let the shopping begin.  Okay so most people started weeks ago but I love to shop so get out there and help our economy.  What a busy week we had.  Reading Reading and more Reading, Wow!  We have also been getting ready for our Kindness Assembly.  Our first graders have been working on showing kindness for the last month and on Friday we presented to the whole school.
With kids stationed at all of the doors, they passed out little notes of kindness to everyone that came to our assembly.  Ms. Hemingway reminded us about what it means to be kind.  She helped the audience to remember to bring in canned goods all next week for the county's Operation Happiness.  She told the kids that we each have an imaginary bucket inside each of us and that it is our job to fill other's bucket with kindness.
Next we sang our kindness song (Ms. Hemingway created).  We decided to have some fun and sang some Christmas songs as well.  I think everyone had a great time.  The last part of our program was our Kindness Commercial.  It's only about 2 1/2 minutes but it gets the message across.  We had fun watching ourselves.

Check it out!

Happy October!

Dear Parents,
It has been great to see all of you this past week.  We have had a busy week so far.   We are up to 15 minutes of reading during our read to self reading block. I am impressed with everyone's reading skills.  Everyone seems to be making progress.  We have started a new unit in math.  Ms. Sylvis came in to show us new ways to think about 10 using a 10's frame.  That was fun.
Our monarch butterflies are hanging up on the wall out side our classroom.  They look beautiful.  Our raffle is hugely popular.  Keep selling those tickets.  Next Tuesday is the big drawing at noon.  Thank you for all of your help.
Remember next week will have fire safety activities and our evacuation practice to the arena.  We will have 3 days off.  Our pumpkin party is on Thursday at 12:45 pm.  More info will come home next week.
   Have a great week.

A New Month

Hello Everyone,
Wow it's been a long time since I updated what's going on in our classroom.  Well we have been very busy getting smarter.  All of our caterpillars transformed into butterflies and have started their journey to Mexico.  We had our Open House.  It was terrific to meet so many parents.  I hope you got a good look at where your child spends most of his/her day.  Our hallway display is loaded with products from our classroom.  I hope you got to see all the pictures on the bulletin board.
We have been very busy reading, reading, reading.  Everyday we are engaged with books during our Daily 5.  During math time we are working on our number sense.  We play games, count, fill-in pattern block shapes, then count some more.   We have also been to the computer lab a couple of times and are enjoying some drawing projects in Paint and have learned how to login to Study Island.  We also watched a great video of a caterpillar changing into a chryalis and a butterfly emerging from a chryalis. Truely an amazing sight.  Time really flies in our first grade classroom.
I just changed over all of our classroom books.  There's a pumpkin theme happening.  I'm sure that there will be some great reading going on this week.  Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our classroom.  Leave us a comment.

Weekend News

Well Boys and Girls,
Our first chrysalis has emerged as a butterfly and has started his migration journey to Mexico.  Bobbie and I let him go Saturday afternoon.  We now have 5 chrysalis working their magic.  Hopefully we will get to see them emerge next week.
I have to say I'm really liking this nice cool air.  I had all of my windows open in my house and it was nice to feel the crisp air.
I finished a book I was reading.  Have you been reading this weekend?  Don't forget to pick up a book or magazine or even the Sunday comics the think about the 3 ways you can read.  1. Read the pictures.  2. Read the words.  3.Retell the story in your own words.
Please check out our class web site @  http://www.fnwsu.org/highgate/dietsche/diethomepage.htm  I updated everything.  I have added pictures and the beautiful apple trees you made in the computer lab on Friday morning.  Great job everyone.
      Have a peaceful weekend.

Thirsty Thursday

Another hot day in first grade.  All we seem to want to do was drink water.  Lots of kids brought in water bottles and we took lots of water breaks to help keep us cool.
Our class has been practicing our Daily 5 skills.  We are up to 15 minutes with our read to self.  We have been learning how to use all of the materials for working with words.  We have been writing in our journals every day concentrating on spaces and periods and putting the date at the top of our pages.
Last night we had another caterpillar move into the chrysalis stage so now we have 5 in chrysalis.  I'm sure this long weekend they will come out and spread their wings.
It's been a very hot week.  I wish we had air conditioning for our classroom.  Maybe some day.
In math we have been counting counting counting.

Wet Wednesday

Hello Everyone,
We have had a very good start to our school year.  We are into our 2nd week and it's a hot one.  We are all sweating in this 90 degree heat.  We have taken lots of water breaks and tried to keep the lights off as much as we can.  It's a good thing that we have 2 fans blowing the hot air around our room.
Some exciting news is that we seem to have a monarch caterpillar farm in our room.  Mrs. Hansen brought in several jars with caterpillars chomping on milkweeds to our classroom.  One went into a chrysalis on the 2nd day and will emerge this week sometime.  We came in one morning to find all the leaves in one jar gone (all eaten) and  one caterpillar in chrysalis stage and 3 more on the sides of the glass.  2 were just little tiny babies.  We didn't realize that there were eggs on the leaves.  As the morning progress one child saw another baby  in another jar.  We moved all active caterpillars to our butterfly netted box.  I put some fresh milkweed leaves in for them to munch on.  At the end of that day I just happened to look at the ziplock bag with our extra leaves and noticed some "caterpillar poop" in it.  When I looked inside there was another caterpillar munching away.  So we are loaded we caterpillars and chrysalis'.  We have been observing the changes everyday.  It has been very exciting for our class.  We can't wait for them to emerge from their chrysalis'.  We hope it happens while we are in school and not over a weekend but Mother Nature may have different ideas.
We have been checking out lots of books for butterfly life cycle information.  We have about 10 books with lots of pictures.  Many pictures match what we are doing in class.
This year our school is studying the country of Mexico.  Our monarch butterfly project is a great tie-in.  Our butterflies will be making the long journey to Mexico as part of their migration track.  We will be participating with other classes in an internet project on the Butterfly migration.  I am so glad our class can experience this first hand.
I'm glad you stopped by to check out what's happening in first grade.  Leave us a comment below and be sure to vote in our butterfly survey.

School Starts Tuesday

Yippee,
I can't wait for school to start.  I am very excited to see all my new students again.  I met most of you on the last day of school in June.  Our classroom is all ready for us to start.  I can't wait to read you my favorite first day of school books.  I've picked out my outfit so I can look spiffy.  What will you be wearing that first day?

Did you get some school supplies?  Here's what you need:  1 red folder, 1 green folder, 1 small glue stick, 1 regular sized pencil box, 8 classic colored markers, pack of crayons and 2 pencils.  No erasers, no pencil sharpeners, no liquid glue, no colored pencils, no notebooks.  Just the basics.  Keep all the extras at home to use for your homework throughout the year.

Check out all of my questions on the left of this page.  Everyone please vote!  It's fun!

I am looking forward to seeing on Tuesday morning.  Don't forget to go to the art room on our first day when you get to school.  Remember that our classroom is right beside the kindergarten rooms.  I be looking for your smiling face at 8:00 am.  Don't be late!

Sincerely, Mrs. Dietsche

Terrific Tuesday

Wow! What a day! We had fun playing games out on the playground. We stacked sand buckets and delivered pizza. We flipped chickens into a fry pan (frizbees). It was a blast! We learned all about Windbags and the Bronnooli effect. Check out windbags and Steve Spangler online. Shaggy's Pizza was yummy along with PB&J sandwiches and brownies was a treat. Mrs. Caswell came in to help out and she forgot her coat and lunch box. They are hanging in our classroom for her to come get. Tell me about our day.

9 Days Left

Wow! What a week! The Tyler Place was fantastic! It was a beautiful day with our parents. Our class looked great in our new tee-shirts. We had a boat ride. It was a cruise really. We hiked through the woods, rode on the zipline, climbed a two story tree house, played on a pirate ship and swam in a big warm pool with a great slide. We danced, ate popsicles, and got sprayed with water by the teachers. It was a ball. Everyone wanted to do it again the next day.
Well we had a another beautiful weekend with parades and pow wows! Please tell me how your weekend was. Where did you go? What did you eat? Who did you see? What happened at the parade? What happened at the Pow Wow? Did you do anything special?
We have 9 days of school left. Next Tuesday we will have a special day! We will have Shaggy's Pizza and PB & J. We have some special activities and Mrs. Caswell will be in for her last visit.

It's Monday again

Good Morning,
It's a beautiful day here in Highgate. We are reading up a storm. We were able to take four books from the room this morning and read. We just love that in our class. Ms. Laderman our music teacher looked like sunshine today. Her class is very fun. We had a presentation about the summer program at the Highgate Library. Wow, there will be lots of fun things to do this summer!
We also wrote in our journals about what we did on our weekend. I am impressed with all the activities our class does over the weekend.
Tomorrow is our big end of the year field trip to the Tyler Place. The tee-shirts are all finished and ready to wear. We weather is forecast to be fantastic. Bring the sun block. No reading homework tonight. Use the checklist to get your bag ready for the trip.
See you all there.

Thursday end of our week

Wow, What a week! We have been busy from start to finish. We have been working on projects for our Mother's Day Tea. It's all a bit hush hush. We want our moms to be surprised. We had our last farming lesson with Mrs. Holiman. We taste tested fruits today. Yummy Yummy!
We finished our reading challenge by reading over 200 books this month. I spray the whole class with silly string in front of the whole school. It was fun to watch the prizes from other classes happen, pie in the face, hair coloring, and cold water poured on a teacher. Let's keep reading.
Have a great vacation everyone. Please leave a comment for our class. We love hearing from everyone.

Monday Monday

Well it's a short week and we have lots to do. It was thrilling to see Natalie Kinsey Wornock this morning. She show us pictures of all the animals she has and has seen on her property in Vermont. She loves her grandmother who made 250 quilts. Natalie showed us 6 different quilts that her grandmother made by hand. She could make a quilt in a week. Wow! Natalie told us to ask our family members if they had stories of when they were growing up so that we could write them down. It was an exciting visit.
What did you learn about during Natalie Kinsey Wornock's visit?

Busy Friday

Wow what a busy day we had in first grade today. We worked in the computer lab blogging and creating a special project. Everyone learned some new skills and worked very hard to complete all tasks. Our current book total for the Wacky Challenge is: 150 books! Wahoo.... we met our goal of reading 100 books and now are working on our second 100. We take pictures of us reading every day. Today we read 2 by 2. We love read.
This afternoon we worked on some challenging math problems. Everyone did a marvelous job at counting by 3s all the way to 72! We also whipped up a bunch more beads for our African Animal Bead Project. We are getting to be experts at making beads. It really helps with our fine motor.
I hope everyone has a great afternoon. Don't forget to bring in a new white tee-shirt.

What did you learn yesterday with Mrs. Holiman?

Fire Drill Thursday

We had 2 fire drills this morning. One was planned and one was unplanned. The unplanned one came when they were resetting the building. But we went right out of the building both times. It was great practice and a beautiful morning.
Mrs. Holiman came in this morning and we talked all about our visit to the farm on Tuesday. We also learned about the different types of grains. We took turns crushing some grain with a stone on a stump. Then we tried our hand at grinding some corn in an old meat grinder. Mrs. Holiman had some whole grain bread for us to try. Most kids said that it was yummy.
Today we talked about things that come in 2's and then we moved on to things that come in 4's during math time. Most of us can count by 4's to 32! Wahooooo....very smart kids!
We are headed to the computer lab in the morning to blog and work on a project.

On Monday March 29th we had a fabulous author Mr. Jerry Pollata come to visit our school. He shared lots of his books and told us what it was like to be an author. He was very funny. Our class liked it when he moved the projector so the a bee was buzzing around. He also made a shark come after some first graders. We love all of books. Here is what first graders are saying about the event.

Mrs. D
Welcome to our New first grade Blog. Our class will be sharing events and new learning that happens in our classroom. Thanks for checking us out.
